3 things young drivers in Alberta can do to save on Insurance

As young drivers, we’re typically given very generic advice when it comes to a practical solution for lowering our insurance premiums. While defensive driving, compliance with the law, and the obvious avoidance of accidents will lower ANY drivers premiums, is there anything a new driver in Alberta can do ‘today’ to get the best rates?

I’ve composed a list of 3 Tips you may have overlooked.

Request a Higher Deductible

If you have a vehicle that you need to have physical damage coverage on (collision, or comprehensive) you can request that the insurance company raise your deductible. If not requested, they may give you the standard deductible the company offers, resulting in a higher premium.

Multi policy discounts

It may sound hard to believe, but bundling your auto insurance with a home or renters policy may actually be cheaper than just auto insurance alone! Many insurance companies in Alberta will offer substantial discounts for having more than one policy with them, so do your homework and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Shop around!

Often times the excitement of purchasing your first vehicle overshadows an equally important second step – insuring your new purchase. In their haste to ‘get on the road’, I’ve seen many new drivers simply head down to the closest insurance agent and sign off on a policy without taking time to read up on important details or make any comparisons. Taking the time to shop around and get quotes from multiple companies is always a good idea. What’s more is that most insurers now offer online quotes that make it easy to shop and compare – and all this without having to get your parents to drive you all over the countryside looking for the best deal! Even if you already have an insurance policy in place, take the time to get some online quotes to see if you are paying too much - it may be worth switching companies mid term!

Although these 3 tips are a great way to get you on the road for less, a clean driving record will always pay off in the long run. Stay safe out there!
