Newfoundland Car Insurance

In Newfoundland, the government requires that all vehicle owners must have a minimum amount of insurance before they can register their car. And on top pf the minimum mandatory car insurance, you can still buy an optional car insurance for better insurance coverage.

Minimum car insurance

The mandatory minimum car insurance has specific requirements which are determined by the provincial government. If you are responsible for the accident which caused injury, death, or damage to property, you have coverage amounting to a maximum of $200,000 of the court award. If you are being sued for property damage and injury, you have coverage amounting to a maximum of $20,000 for the damage to property.

If another driver is responsible for the accident which caused injuries, death, or damage to property, you can also sue that driver. You can also file a claim against that driver. Court awards are subject to a deduction amounting to $2,500.

Additional car insurance

If you believe that the minimum mandatory insurance coverage does not cover all your needs, you can choose to buy additional car insurance. In fact, many Newfoundlanders purchase additional car insurance. You can purchase another car insurance policy that will give you added benefits like coverage for medical costs for you and others involved in the car accident, income replacement if your injury caused you to be absent from work, and death benefits like funeral costs and entitlement of your spouse and children to a certain amount of money.
